Unrecognizable by Eric Ulrich

 

Unrecognizable, 108"x36", Photographs and acrylic on canvas.

Based on a Norwegian folk tale my Grandmother used to tell me. Even though it has a sudden and unhappy ending, as a child I begged her to retell the story over and over again. I can still feel her fingers pinching my sweater as she described the part where the bird pulls at the thread of the dead fishermen.

I took two photos from exactly the same place at Ocean Beach. One at precisely sunrise and the other that same day at sunset. I produced two large-format iris prints, cut them up and pasted them down in alternating strips. Acrylic paint on top. (Larger image in the Recent Work photo gallery)

I recently dreamt I was walking around inside this photograph by Bernard Voita. It has long been one of my favorites of his and a perfect example of playful construction and mesmerizing use of perspective. If you don't already have his book White Garden, get it now.

The Delta Shower by Inga Sempé

I have designed and built not one, but two different outdoor showers in my life. Both required the design to integrate into the landscape. As much as I like the simplicity of Inga Sempé's Delta Shower that hooks up to a garden hose, I have to brag that mine had cold and hot water.

"In 2006 I was traveling thru France and found brilliantly colored printed “visual aides” at a flea market. Originally these visual aides were didactic drawings used in classrooms in the late 1950’s to illustrate for children different aspects of the world (farming, industry, water tables the seashore, etc). I scanned, archived and reproduced these images on watercolor paper and updated them with specific current events which relate to the state of our environment and how humans anthropomorphize the planet."
